Dos
Wolfenstein 3D is a pioneering first-person shooter developed by id Software and released by Apogee Software on May 5, 1992. Originally launched for the MS-DOS operating system, the game drew inspiration from the 1980s titles Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein. A shareware version of Wolfenstein 3D allowed it to be widely distributed, leading to its eventual porting across numerous computer systems and consoles. Each episode consists of nine sequential levels (or 'maps') that players must complete by reaching an elevator to advance. As players navigate these levels, they face guards, dogs, and various enemies while managing ammunition and health supplies. If a player's health reaches zero, they lose a life, along with their weapons and ammunition, retaining only a pistol with eight rounds and a knife. Players can also find a submachine gun and a rapid-firing chain gun, all using the same ammunition type. Stealth gameplay is possible, allowing players to eliminate enemies or evade detection, particularly effective against Nazis. Players start each episode with three lives and can earn additional lives by collecting extra-life tokens or reaching 40,000 points. In the original version of the game, players can save their progress at any time. However, in most console adaptations, players must complete a level before saving. Players can gather treasures throughout the levels to increase their scores, and they can search walls for secret passages leading to treasure caches, ammunition, or health refills. At the end of each level, players receive percentage scores based on treasure collection, enemy eliminations, and secrets discovered. Additional bonus points can be earned by achieving a 100% ratio for kills, secrets, or treasures, or by completing levels faster than average. Every episode culminates in a confrontation with a unique boss, necessary to complete the episode. Unlike regular enemies, bosses are rendered from a single angle and face the player directly, making surprise attacks impossible. Initially stationary, they only become active upon seeing the player. After defeating most bosses, a deathcam replay showcases the boss's demise, concluding the episode. Some levels feature an exit behind the boss, where the camera shifts to follow the protagonist, B.J. Blazkowicz, as he escapes in celebration. Each episode also includes a hidden secret level accessed by uncovering a concealed elevator; notably, the secret level in the third episode is a tribute to Pac-Man, complete with ghosts viewed from Pac-Man’s perspective. The initial three episodes follow Blazkowicz's mission to dismantle the Nazi regime. An American spy of Polish heritage, Blazkowicz finds himself imprisoned in Castle Wolfenstein while searching for the plans for Operation Eisenfaust. Armed initially with a knife and a Luger P08 seized from a guard, he attempts to escape. The second episode, titled Operation: Eisenfaust, reveals the Nazis' creation of an undead army in Castle Hollehammer. Blazkowicz confronts Dr. Schabbs, the mad scientist behind this operation, whose defeat ends the biological threat. The final episode, Die, Führer, Die!, sees Blazkowicz battling Adolf Hitler, who is equipped with a robotic suit and armed with multiple chainguns. The Nocturnal Missions serve as a prequel, focusing on Germany's plans for chemical warfare (Giftkrieg). Each of these episodes contains ten levels. In A Dark Secret, Blazkowicz must pursue the scientist responsible for the chemical weapons. The episode Trail of the Madman takes place in Castle Erlangen, where he seeks out maps and plans guarded by Gretel Grosse, Hans' sister. The storyline culminates in Confrontation, set in Castle Offenbach, featuring the final showdown against General Fettgesicht, the leader of the chemical warfare initiative. Despite its historical context and featuring Hitler as a boss, Wolfenstein 3D does not depict any actual Nazi plans or structures. The level designs are highly imaginative, with some layouts featuring swastikas prominently. Notably, one level is constructed entirely of swastika patterns.
